The United Jewish Federation of Tidewater nurtures a vibrant, engaged, inclusive and caring Jewish community whose collective action is guided by our values.

Nepal Relief Fund

In the wake of the devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake that has already claimed well over 1,000 lives and caused widespread destruction in Kathmandu and the surrounding region (including northeast India), Our overseas partner, the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) is mobilizing its emergency teams and working with local authorities, the Nepalese and Indian governments, Israel Defense Forces and global partners to assess the unfolding situation and ensure survivors’ immediate needs are addressed. JDC’s critical focus will be on providing medical relief and supplies in the hardest-hit areas.

We are also proud to say that along with the JDC, an Israel Defense Force (IDF) advance team of about a dozen officers arrived in Katmandu on Sunday to assess needs and a larger medical mission of IDF and Magen David Adom personnel departed Israel Sunday morning. The IDF is sending a large delegation of over 200 medical and search and rescue personnel along with a mobile field hospital within two weeks.

JDC has set up an emergency campaign to provide urgent assistance in response to this emerging disaster.

It's at times like this, that our shared commitment to Tikkun Olam, repairing the world, finds its deepest expression. In the past, the United Jewish Federation of Tidewater and Tidewater Jewish Foundation  have worked through our partners to provide immediate relief and long-term assistance to victims of natural and manmade disasters around the globe, including the Philippines, Haiti, Japan, and South Asia after the Indian Ocean Tsunami and continue to operate programs designed to rebuild infrastructure and community life in disaster-stricken regions.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Nepalese people.
