Richmond General Assembly
Virginia Jewish Advocacy Day 2014
Meet Hampton Roads’ State Delegates & Senators

Virginia Jewish Advocacy Day will soon be upon us!  Wednesday, February 5th will be this year's "Date with the State," when Jews from throughout the Commonwealth will descend on the Virginia General Assembly to lobby our legislators on issues important to our Jewish communities.  Our Date with the State program will start at 11 a.m. in Richmond, so we will leave by bus from the Simon Family JCC at 8:45 a.m.

Virginia's new Governor, Lt. Governor and Att. General have all been invited to speak with us over an early lunch with fellow citizen activists from around the state.  After their talks, while the General Assembly is in session, we will be briefed on key Jewish issues on which we will be lobbying.  Then, as the House of Delegates and the State Senate adjourn for the day (usually around 2 p.m.), we will divide up into small groups for a series of scheduled, 20 minute meetings with area legislators.  We expect to leave Richmond by 4 p.m.

The Community Relations Council will hold a meeting on January 8th at 6:00pm at the Sandler Family Campus to discuss our legislative agenda and invite the community to participate in the discussion.  As in the past, we expect to discuss:  advocating on health care, Medicaid and public guardianship issues important to Beth Sholom Village and Jewish Family Service of Tidewater.  Participants in Date with the State should also expect to lobby on diverse issues such as preserving the separation of church and state as well as supporting funding for the Virginia-Israel Advisory Board, and other issues still under consideration.

Those planning to participate in the visit to Richmond should also plan on attending the very important lobbying tips and talking points review on January 30th at the Sandler Family Campus at 6:00pm.

The minimal cost of $36 to participate includes a kosher lunch and helps to defray the transportation expense.
