The Holocaust Commission of the United Jewish Federation of Tidewater invites you to become a White Rose donor.
Hans and Sophie Scholl, young and idealistic German students, were appalled by what was happening around them in 1943. They formed a resistance group called “The White Rose,” and heroically protested the policies and actions of the Nazi regime. Hans, his sister Sophie, and many of the students and teachers who made up the group were eventually arrested and executed.
Each year the Tidewater Jewish community honors their memory with the White Rose Project.
Since 1996, the White Rose Project has:
- Produced the book To Life: Stories of Courage and Survival, documenting the stories of local survivors, liberators, and righteous gentiles
- Donated books on the Holocaust to middle and upper school libraries and classrooms
- Helped sponsor a conference for elementary school educators on teaching children respect for differences
- Given more than 1000 books on the Holocaust to the libraries of 95 Navy ships home ported in Norfolk
We believe that teaching the lessons of the Holocaust is sacred work.
