Veteran’s Day Memorial Event
Honors Veterans and highlights “The Making of the U.S. Army Talmud”

On Veterans Day, November 11, 2011, the Tidewater Jewish Foundation will hold a Memorial event honoring Jewish War Veterans who have served our country.  This memorial service will take place at 11:00am on the Reba and Sam Sandler Family Campus of the Tidewater Jewish Community, outside, at the Jewish War Veterans monument which was completed and unveiled in 2010.

Oddly, cultural myths about Jews and a perceived avoidance of military service persist.  This Hampton Roads monument proves the myth to be pure fabrication.  Whenever this nation has called its young men and women to battle, American Jews have stepped up.  They have bled and died for this country, and continue to do so today.

832 In addition to the memorial service, a re-dedication of the Survivors’ Talmud, will take place in memory of Leonard Strelitz.  It recounts the story of a "Particular Responsibility: The Making of the U.S. Army Talmud."  By 1945, not one complete set of the Talmud could be found in Europe.  The publication of the Survivors’ Talmud constitutes a defining moment in the history of the United States military and that of the Jewish people.  This production of the Talmud is the only time in modern history that a national government published an edition of this religious text.  The Tidewater Jewish Foundation is grateful to be able to share this display and story with individuals and groups throughout the Hampton Roads Jewish and non-Jewish community.
Following the dedication, a light lunch will be served in the Fleder Multi-Purpose Room.  If you wish to attend the event, please RSVP to Shelby Tudor at (757) 965-6105 or by Wednesday, November 9, 2011.  In addition, if anyone would like to purchase a memorial paver to honor a veteran, please contact Benita Watts at (757) 965-6123 or
The Tidewater Jewish Foundation invites the community to join us on November 11th to honor those men and women who have served our country with true dedication and bravery.
