28 Jewish women from Tidewater recently participated in a UJFT mission to the Jewish community of Havana, Cuba. For 4 days, the group immersed itself in Cuban culture – both inside and outside the walls of the Synagogues and JCC. From Kiddush wine to Mojitos; from traditional chicken dinner to black beans and rice; and from Havdalah to Salsa sancing at the Tropicana… the mission was a wonderful opportunity for our group to “follow its charitable dollars;” to see the kinds of programs and services we help to fund through our overseas partner, the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC); and to experience a “world away” – only 90 miles from Key West.

The Women's Division of the United Jewish Federation of Tidewater provides a vehicle for women to collectively promote, enhance and celebrate Jewish life. The Women's Division works to strengthen the community while demonstrating the impact a woman can make by voicing her support through the Annual Campaign.
Women have traditionally served in volunteer roles as activists and care-givers. Until recently, few have viewed themselves as philanthropists with the power to shape the future of the Jewish community. Statistics tell us that over the next few years there will be a great shift of wealth to the women of the Jewish community. It will then be incumbent upon us to assume the mantle of responsibility to make practical and often difficult decisions about how to fund the institutions that we love and that our community needs.
