1271 MORALITY – Amos Guiora
Tuesday, November 27th at 7:00pm

Amos Guiora is a Professor of Law at the S.J. Quinney College of Law, the University of Utah. Guiora who teaches Criminal Procedure, International Law, Global Perspectives on Counterterrorism and Religion and Terrorism incorporates innovative scenario-based instruction to address national and international security issues and dilemmas. He is a Member of the American Bar Association’s Law and National Security Advisory Committee, a Research Associate at the University of Oxford, Oxford Institute for Ethics, Law and Armed Conflict; a Research Fellow at the International Institute on Counter-Terrorism, The Interdisciplinary Center, Herzylia, Israel; a Corresponding Member, The Netherlands School of Human Rights Research, University of Utrecht School of Law and was awarded a Senior Specialist Fulbright Fellowship for The Netherlands in 2008. Professor Guiora has published extensively both in the U.S. and Europe on issues related to national security, limits of interrogation, religion and terrorism, the limits of power and multiculturalism and human rights. He is the author of Global Perspectives on Counterterrorism (first and second editions), Fundamentals of Counterterrorism, Constitutional Limits on Coercive Interrogation, Homeland Security: What is it and Where is it Going and Freedom from Religion: Rights and National Security (first and second editions). He served for 19 years in the Israel Defense Forces as Lieutenant Colonel (retired), and held a number of senior command positions, including Commander of the IDF School of Military Law and Legal Advisor to the Gaza Strip. Professor Guiora was awarded the S.J. Quinney College of Law Faculty Scholarship Award, 2011.

Neil Lazarus is an internationally acclaimed expert in the field of Middle East, Israel advocacy and effective communication training. He is emerging as one of Israel's leading most sought-after speakers. His presentations are fun, informative and entertaining .  Lazarus has helped train a new generation of Israeli diplomats as well as Israel's army and air force spokespeople.

Neil Lazarus earned a B.A. in Political Science from the University of Wales. In 1988, he immigrated to Israel and earned his M.A. at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Lazarus has served as a consultant for the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Israeli Defense Forces, the Israel Air Force, the Israeli Ministry of Tourism, Jewish Federations, Keshet Television, The World Bank, Harvard University Extension Courses in Israel, Yad Vashem, Hillel, Hadassah, Birthright, the Jewish Agency, reality show The Ambassador, and the Herzliya Interdisciplinary Center.

Lazarus is the director of an Israel advocacy website, AwesomeSeminars.com, that has partnered with the Israeli Foreign Ministry and the Jewish Agency for Israel in a project aimed at increasing the ability of students to engage in hasbara. (public relations efforts to disseminate information about Israel) Lazarus said that "hasbara is not just the role of government spokespeople. It's the role of the Jewish people." Lazarus travels to colleges and communities around the world, and meets with hundreds of Birthright students, to teach students and teachers how best to argue on behalf of Israel.

How Israel Is Grappling With the Middle East Crises

David Makovsky is the Senior Fellow and Director of The Washington Institute’s Project on the Middle East Peace Process. An award-winning journalist, Mr. Makovsky is a former executive editor of the Jerusalem Post and was a diplomatic correspondent for Haaretz. Often called upon by the media to comment on the peace process and the Arab-Israeli conflict, Mr. Makovsky is the coauthor of the 2009 bestseller Myths, Illusions, and Peace: Finding a New Direction in the Middle East with Dennis Ross. Mr. Makovsky is a lifetime member of the Council on Foreign Affairs and the London-based International Institute for Strategic Studies.
