Don't Miss Seeing Hannah Rosenthal at the Sandler Family Campus

Tue, 03/22/2011 - 1:13pm

485 Hannah Rosenthal, the State Department’s Special Envoy to monitor and combat anti-Semitism, will make a rare appearance on the Sandler Family Campus March 28th at 7:30 p.m., speaking  on “Combating Anti-Semitism: Thinking Globally and Acting Locally.”

“This is an opportunity for our community to get first-hand information from a well-versed, knowledgeable and internationally known speaker about issues that are of vital interest and that concern Jewish well-being,” said Miriam Seeherman, chair of the Community Relations Council of the United Jewish Federation of Tidewater.

Rosenthal has described a disturbing trend of increasing global anti-Semitism, the challenges of her job and some of her initiatives:

“…My title calls for both monitoring and combating anti-Semitism. Combating this ancient hatred is daunting and calls for many different strategies. My approach to combating anti-Semitism is to have non-Jews condemn it – government, civil society, international institutions, business leaders, labor unions, media.”

Rabbi Israel Zoberman of Congregation Beth Chaverim in Virginia Beach is a friend and colleague of Rosenthal’s. He knew her father first as a rabbinic colleague and later met Rosenthal when she was the Executive Director of the Jewish Council for Public Affairs.

“She is loyal, dedicated and is so very capable,” said Zoberman. “She will be here as a resource, to enlighten us to what’s happening in the world and in our country with Jewish concerns.

“And the timing of her visit is good—to have someone of her caliber who’s immersed in the State Department and is privy to the kind of conversations that effect U.S. Policy is very fortunate for us.”

Rosenthal’s visit is sponsored by a partnership of the CRC, the Holocaust Commission and Old Dominion University’s Hillel. It is free and open to the public.
