In response to media reports that the Israeli government is in the final stages of negotiations to award to the Ir David Foundation (Amutat EL-AD) the governance of areas of the Old City, including the Southern section of the Western Wall, Jewish Federations of North America President and CEO Jerry Silverman released the following statement:

“The Jewish Federations remain actively involved in conversations with the liberal streams and Israeli leaders about authority over the Western Wall area. We continue to support a compromise that is acceptable to all sides and consistent with the plan that has been discussed with all partners. Ultimately, all Jews should have a place at the Kotel. We experienced that ourselves only a few months ago at the Jewish Federations’ General Assembly, where over 1,000 people walked to the Kotel and were able to pray in a space most comfortable to them. We hope that the Prime Minister’s office and all involved will stay the course toward a compromise that satisfies both traditional and pluralistic approaches and access to the area. Any major deviation from this existing plan would be very unfortunate.”
