Wed, 04/27/2011 - 10:30am

69 This year Yom Hashoah will be commemorated on May 1 at Ohef Sholom Temple.  In honor of Holocaust Remembrance Day, the local Holocaust Commission has been preparing a very meaningful program that will honor Holocaust survivors and righteous gentiles as well as pay homage to the 6 million Jews who perished during this horrific time in history.

He wasn’t exactly Colin Firth. But then, who is?

Wed, 04/06/2011 - 11:07am

492 Those who know me know this: I am not a “gusher.” I don’t giggle or stammer or go weak in the knees over every pretty face I see… In fact, at 45 years old, I can count on one hand the number of “crushes” I’ve had in my life – alright, maybe one hand and a couple of fingers  (if you include my romantic notions  about “Ponch and John” of the 1970’s TV show “CHiPs”). But today, the count rests at three:  my darling husband (of course); actor Colin Firth, and Dr. Rick Hodes of the JDC. Read more »

Thoughts on the Annual Campaign

Tue, 03/29/2011 - 11:40am

67 The United Jewish Federation of Tidewater Campaign takes up a greater portion of the year than it did ten or twenty years ago, primarily due to a decrease in the numbers of volunteer solicitors. Still, while we bemoan the effects of assimilation and economic times, there is still a core of concern in our Jewish Community that allows us to achieve an Annual Campaign in excess of $4 million dollars.

Behind the Scenes at A Night to Honor Israel

Tue, 03/08/2011 - 11:47am

465 We must do more with less. Recent economic conditions have made this the catch phrase of charitable institutions worldwide. It rings true for the UJFT as well. Read more »

Telling Children Why They Must Remember Is Our Mission

Thu, 03/03/2011 - 10:57am

432 When the last living witnesses to the atrocities of the Holocaust are gone, who will tell the stories? Unless we tell our children, no one will, and history could easily repeat itself, as it has so many times throughout history.

Anne Frank’s famous diary told her story after she perished, and Through the Eyes of a Friend, a dramatic presentation brought to our community each year by the Holocaust Commission, is opening the pages of that diary up in a new way for over 3000 Hampton Roads students this year. Read more »

Super Sunday: “Working Together to Build Community”

Mon, 02/07/2011 - 10:45am

66 Super Sunday is an annual event for the Federation, held the last Sunday of January. Super Sunday is so much more than one morning of calls to the community, however. It is a day of conversation, where we would ideally communicate to all of our constituents, thanking them for their Federated gift and listening to their suggestions as to how to build a better community together. Together, We are the Federation

Fri, 01/14/2011 - 11:19am

65

This year we are tasked with engaging more members of the community.  Our goal is for donors to support the community and know that all gifts, no matter how small, count.  Every gift makes a difference. It feeds 160,000 elderly Jews in the former Soviet Union. It provides job counseling services and emergency aid to those affected by the economic crisis here at home. And it supports programming that inspires a young family’s love of Jewish life and culture. Read more »

The Federation is Looking Ahead

Fri, 01/14/2011 - 11:17am

66 During the past two years of economic challenge, we can take pride in the creativity and hard work that has allowed us to fund our agencies at 100%.  As we look to the challenges which will surely be presented by the 2011 campaign, we recognize that we will have to do things a bit differently if we are to gain back some of our losses.

in an effort to weather the tough economy, our local agencies have trimmed their budgets and re-focused on core programs.  We are currently undergoing a strategic planning process and jointly with the UJFT finance committee will develop an innovative path for our community’s development.

At the same time our agencies were tightening their belts, the leadership of our community pulled together to maximize every dollar that we could raise. The Tidewater Jewish Foundation and our major donor families have offered an incredible $300,000 match grant each year of the past two campaigns. Read more »
